Men's Vesture from 1700

Many men in the early on 1700's did not own more than virtually two-4 outfits. Their clothing would usually be made of wool or linen and would all exist hand sewn, either past a woman they knew or if they lived in or about a city and had some money, past a tailor. Standards of cleanliness were very different from today as germs had non been discovered even so and the links between dirt, infection and disease had not been made. This meant that clothing was not done ofttimes and some items that did non touch the peel, such equally a waistcoat, might never exist washed!

Undergarments

Shirt

A man'southward shirt would be made of linen and would serve as a nightshirt as well. He might only ain two or three. He would wear his shirt night and twenty-four hours, often for weeks or more at a time especially in winter, without laundering. Underpants did non exist yet and before a man put on his breeches he tucked his shirt upwardly around his legs somewhat like a diaper.

Stockings

Everyone wore socks called "stockings" that came upward over the knee. They were usually hand-knitted of wool or linen.

Garters

Elastic had not been invented yet, so stockings were held upwards with garters. These garters could exist made of ribbon, knitted or leather strips and might tie or buckle on above or beneath the knee. This man wears leather garters that buckle on.


Foundation Garments

Breeches

Men in this fourth dimension period did not wear long pants. Their pants, chosen "breeches", came to just beneath the knee. They had a push button fly and pockets and frequently buttoned at the knee joint equally well.

Waistcoat

This homo wears a waistcoat. This i is sleeveless, like to what is called a belong today, merely a waistcoat might besides have sleeves. There are many more buttons down the front than are needed because they were considered stylish for men. Women's wear usually had no buttons!

Shoes

Shoes were manus sewn by "cordwainers", or shoemakers. They had no rights or lefts. This human does not have on his everyday shoes. These are blue and made fancier with heels that are painted ruddy. These red heels would be considered quite stylish for men.

Kerchief

This man wears or "kerchief", or "cervix cloth". The style shown here is called a "steinkirk" and was pop in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It might be made of cotton or silk. Men's ties had not been invented withal.

Hair

Long hair was common. This man wears his braided in a "queue". People did non wash their pilus as frequently as we do today. One might not wash their hair all winter long! This is one reason why a man might keep his pilus tied or braided back away from his face.

Chapeau

There were many styles of blackness felt hats fabricated from either wool or the undercoat of a beaver. This lid is a three-cornered hat, known equally a "tricorn", made of wool. The decoration on the side is a "cockade".


Coat

This coat is fabricated of wool. Notice all of the buttons! It has slits called "vents" on the sides and back to make it fit comfortably when a homo rides a horse.


Outer Garments

Great Coat

"Nifty coats" were made of wool and were used as overcoats. They fit loosely so that they tin can be worn comfortably over a number of layers of article of clothing. If a man was camping ground in the wood he might slumber in his nifty glaze.
